Don Gossett Wins Opening 2009 Tournament at LOZ
The Pony Express Bass Club held its first tournament of the year Apr. 18-19 on Lake of the Ozarks. Capturing first place with 8 bass weighing 24.38 lbs. was Don Gossett of St. Jospeh. Gossett reported catching all of his fish on a black neon and a chartruese tube bait fished behind boat docks. Gossett also captured the big bass of the tournament with a fish weighing 6.14 lbs.
First-Don Gossett, Third-Ed Powell, Second-Bill Gott
In second place was Warsaw angler Bill Gott. Gott fished a black neon tube bait on secondary points in the Osage River and also in a cove in the lower Niangua Arm.
Gott weighed in 7 fish totaling 20.92 lbs.
Ed Powell of Cameron finished third with 7 bass weighing16.86 lbs. Powell caught all of his fish on a green crawdad colored Wiggle Wart crank bait on main lake and secondary points in the lower Grand Glaize Arm.
Finishing fourth was St. Joseph angler Larry Piper with 6 bass weighing 14.85 lbs. Piper caught all of his fish on secondary points and in the backs of coves on a chartruese spinner bait.
Rounding out the top 5 was Cameron angler Gary Highfill with 2 bass weighing 8.45 lbs. Highfill also had second largest bass which weighed 5.04 lbs. Highfill caught his fish on a spinner bait fishing lay downs in the backs of coves.
Main lake temperatures ranged from 54-56 degrees with the water clear to lightly stained in most areas. The club's next tournament will be held on Pomme de Terre Lake May 16-17.
