The Pony Express Bass Club of St. Joseph held its fourth tournament of the season with Bill Gott of Warsaw, MO capturing the tournament win with 10 keepers weighing an impressive 41.13 lbs. Gott led the tournament after day one and held on to win. Gott was fishing a 10 inch black fleck Berkley Power Worm in the upper regions of the lake concentrating on trees in the 8-14 feet depth range.=
In a close second place was Russell Matt of St. Joseph with 10 keepers weighing 40.13 lbs. Just one pound separated first and second places. Matt used a white Spro Popping Frog a 1/2 oz. black/blue/purple jig and a watermelon/red Zero plastic bait concentrating on main lake points and the upper regions of the lake. His fish were in depths from 3 up to 14 feet.
Third place went to St. Joseph angler Don Gossett with 10 keepers weighing 36.57 lbs. Gossett had an impressive second day catch of 23.78 lbs. which moved him up to third place. Gossett's catch was anchored with a 6.39 lb. bass which won him big bass honors. Gossett used a 10 inch black/blue tail Berkley Power Worm and a Super Hog in water melon color fished in 8-14 feet of water in the upper region of the lake.=
Fourth place went to Steve Read of St. Joseph with 9 bass weighing 23.46 lbs. Read was fishing the backs of coves in 3-7 feet of water using a green pumpkin Super Hog and a black/blue Eakins jig fishing around trees and lay downs.
Larry Piper of St. Joseph finished fifth with 9 bass weighing 22.77 lbs. Piper used a water melon seed colored Super Hog and a swim bait fished in trees in the upper regions of the lake. Most of his keepers were caught in the 10 foot range.
The club weighed in a season high 89 keepers weighing 277.27 lbs. The surface temperature of the lake ranged from 78-80 degrees with mainly clear to lightly stained water.=20
After 4 qualifying tournaments Ed Powell of Cameron leads the club with 130 points followed closely by Don Gossett with 128. Gary Highfill of Cameron is third with 121 points. In fourth and fifth places are Steve Read with 99 and Bill Gott 98. The club's next tournament will be Aug. 1-2 also at Mozingo Lake.
